It also provides community profiles, proceedings, regional issues such as the public safety and justice discussions, traffic study, Wireless Washtenaw project updates, WATS, 2003 SWWCOG Regional Plan, 1 Washtenaw program, regional recycling issues, various links and contact information.
This Web site also hosts the Manchester Chicken Broil and promises to provide additional information to entice visitors to the event in 2006.
IN OTHER discussions at the Aug. 10 SWWCOG meeting, the Washtenaw County Solid Waste Consortium is suggesting that Bridgewater Township officials consider the consolidation of Solid Waste Hauler contracts.
According to a Department of Transportation study that was released in February, because of its weight, one waste hauler does as much damage to county roads as 1,000 car trips.
Cindy Carver, Bridgewater Township clerk, believes that as many as eight to twelve of these vehicles a day travel through Bridgewater and feels that residents are not as loyal to their waste haulers as they are to other providers; thus they could be more receptive to a change.
Superior Township consolidated its haulers four or five years ago, while adding scale pits and fines for overweight haulers. Traffic and rates were reduced; the violations increased township revenues.
The village of Manchester has had consolidated waste haulers for years and Lodi Township decided not to consolidate, citing a free enterprise issue."
Ron Mann advised that Manchester Village negotiates rates annually with contracted village haulers.
SWWCOG members are expected to discuss consolidation options with their boards in the near future. Key topics of consideration include: road damage and repair costs, price reductions, fines for weight violations, and special services for those seniors and handicapped residents who may be unable to carry garbage out to the road.
