Manchester's May Blood Drive, sponsored by the Washtenaw County Chapter of the American Red Cross, took place May 7 at the Emil Jacobs American Legion Post 117 with a lower turnout than in the past, but plenty of valuable pints collected.
Fifty-three people donated at the blood drive with a total of 44 pints collected. The participation was lower than previous drives, largely because of a virus that plagued several residents.
"A number of appointment cancellations were caused by sickness," said Marja Warner of St. Mary's Parish Center, who helped coordinate the drive.
Several Manchester residents recorded a milestone with their donations. Leading the way was Ronald Tindall, who reached the 10-gallon mark. Shannon Green's donation put her at three gallons, while Russell Curby and Duane Robertson reached the one-gallon milestone.
Veteran blood donators were not the only ones participating. The drive marked the first time in Manchester resident Kimberly Roberts' life that she donated blood.
Members of the American Legion Auxiliary were active with the drive as well. The Auxiliary greeted potential donors at the door and managed the juice and cookie table.
Manchester's next community blood drive will take place July 16 at St. Mary's Parish Center. Warner and the Red Cross have set a goal of 70 pints.
"This puts us right in the middle of summer vacation," Warner said. "It's a very busy time for everyone and blood donations are typically low. Let's show the rest of the Red Cross Southeastern region that we can not only meet the goal, but surpass it."
