Lions Club seeks new volunteers

Membership numbers climbing steadily

By Daniel Lai, Editor

PUBLISHED: May 24, 2007

The Manchester Lions Club is still looking for a few good men and women to join one of the village's newest volunteer organizations.

"Every community has a Lions Club but Manchester doesn't," board president Barry Allen said. "The Lions Club can do a lot for the people who live in the Manchester area."

Allen said currently the organization has roughly 11 members, nine short of the required amount needed to achieve charter status.

"We understand it's hard for a lot of people to commit their time to yet another organization, but we hope there are some out there who just may have not heard what we are trying to do."

Lions Clubs International is best-known for projects involving sight and hearing preservation.

The list includes cataract surgery, preschool vision screenings, paying for eyeglasses and related medical exams for the needy

Lions Clubs also support Leader Dog training, Braille transcribing, diabetes research and organ donation.

In accordance with its motto, "We Serve," Lions Clubs are dedicated to service projects on a community level.

Lions Clubs International is the largest service club in the world. Established in 1917 in the Chicago area, today there are approximately 1.3 million Lions clubs members in 200 countries or territories in the world.

Club Secretary Peggy Allen said members from the Jackson Eyeopeners and the Michigan Center Lions Club began actively pursuing the idea of establishing the organization in Manchester earlier this year.

"It was something they wanted to see come to Manchester," she said.

The club is open to men and women, and is seeking individuals interested in identifying needs within the community and working together to meet those needs, Peggy said.

The Lions Club meets at 7 p.m. every third Thursday of the month at the Whistle Stop restaurant in Manchester.
