Hornets rally in final to snap Manchester's five-game win streak

For five innings, the Manchester junior varsity baseball team appeared on its way to a victory over a bigger school and tournament championship.

The Saline Hornets asserted themselves in the final two innings, however, and rallied for a 15-11 victory over the Flying Dutchmen in the finals of the Clinton JV Tournament Saturday.

The loss snapped the Dutchmen's five-game winning streak. Manchester advanced to the finals with a 13-3 victory over the Homer Trojans.

The Dutchmen carried a lead into the fifth inning, but Saline erupted for 12 runs over the final two frames to claim the victory. Manchester was also hurt by four errors during the Hornets' surge.

"We played five great innings of baseball, but we let two late leads slip away," Manchester coach Jeff Punches said.

Trevor Hanewald enjoyed a big game at the plate, going 4-for-5 with six RBIs to lead Manchester. Evan Bortmas and Logan Zigila each went 3-for-5, while Coyle Render was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Jimmy Hamilton went 2-for-5 and Brent Schriber finished 1-for-3 for the Dutchmen.

Hanewald was charged with the pitching loss.

Manchester put its offensive depth on display in the semifinal victory over Homer. The game was stopped after five innings due to the mercy rule.

Schriber, Hanewald and Bortmas led the attack. Each finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Hamilton went 3-for-3 with a RBI, while Zigila was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Render went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Corwin Every added two hits for the Dutchmen.

Hanewald recorded the pitching win, scattering five hits and striking out eight in five innings.

"We played extremely well," Punches said. "We executed offensively and Trevor continues to improve on the mound."

Wednesday's game against East Jackson took place after the newspaper's deadline. The Dutchmen will travel to Michigan Center today, then conclude the season Saturday with the Sand Creek Tournament.

Dutchmen at Addison

Timely hitting helped the Flying Dutchmen extend its winning streak to four games with 11-7 and 7-6 victory over the Addison Panthers in a Cascades Conference doubleheader last Friday.

Bortmas sparked the Dutchmen in the opener, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a triple and two RBIs. Zigila went 2-for-5 with two RBIs, while Josh Caswell, Rob Carver and Hanewald were each 2-for-3 with an RBI. Render finished 1-for-4 with a RBI for Manchester.

Render earned the win on the mound, striking out three in five innings. Jeff Horodeczny pitched the final two innings and recorded the save.

Grant Jobkar and Hamilton led the way for Manchester in the nightcap. Jobkar went 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, while Hamilton was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Render and Zigila each had a hit and an RBI and Hanewald finished 2-for-3 for the Dutchmen.

Jobkar recorded the pitching win in relief. He allowed two hits and struck out two in the final two innings.
