"I was approached about a year ago about the possibility of working on a grant for funding to beautify the area around the electric boards in the park," Smith said. "We were going to do it earlier but we postponed it till spring."
Susan Fielder, Riverfolk Festival executive board member, said the $150 grant was awarded to the group from the Michigan State Extension Service.
"Two years ago, the Riverfolk Community Arts Alliance raised the money for the electric boards in the park. This project is just to make the area around them look less industrial," she said.
Four students in Smith's class will work on the project in conjunction with the Manchester Parks Commission.
"The labor is coming from the students. The Parks Commission donated the mulch. They (the commission) have been made aware of the project from the start. We went to them prior to applying for the grant," she said.
Smith said the students will prepare the soil and plant several flowers in the area, including blue indigo, orange coneflower and lavender.
Smith said although he doesn't have a definite finish date on the project, he doesn't expect it to take too long to complete.
"It might go a little longer than we anticipate. We're not sure yet," he said.
Smith said the project garnered students' interest because it correlated to the curriculum he teaches in his science classes.
"We talk about what plants need for growth and proper soil practices, so this is right up our alley as far as curriculum," he said.
