John Porter, a trustee on the commission, will serve as the interim chairman for the next two months. He was approved as the interim chairman during Monday's Planning Commission meeting at the Bridgewater Township Hall.
The Planning Commission also announced that it will hold elections for a full-time chairman and vice chairman during its July 9 meeting.
The commission is looking to replace former chairman Mike Bisco and vice chairman Glenn Burkhardt. Bisco was dismissed as the Planning Commission chairman by the Bridgewater Township Board of Trustees on May 3, while Burkhardt recently resigned. Burkhardt will remain listed as a member of the commission until his resignation is official.
Porter moderated his first meeting as chairman Monday, but is anxious to have full-time appointees in the open positions.
"This is not a job for a moderator," Porter told the commission. "We need to get back on track with a chair and vice chair."
According to the Planning Commission trustees, the township board has people in mind that are qualified for the position. Names of the candidates have not been provided yet, though the board could make a decision on nominees at its next meeting.
"The new appointees must be willing to step into a leadership role quickly," Porter said.
The commission hopes that whoever is elected as chairman and vice chairman will be able to improve communication between it and the township board. It also hopes that the new officials are committed to the planning commission and keep the best interest of the township residents in mind.
"We need people who will put the time in and come up with the right answers," Trustee Mark Iwanicki said. "They need to be able to interpret the information given to them so they don't have to go to someone else."
Since Bisco's dismissal, Porter and Deb Corwin organized the agenda for Monday's meeting.
"Mike put in a lot of effort and we need to thank him for that," Iwanicki said. "Deb and John had to go through a lot the last few days to prepare for this meeting."
