Early hole too deep for Dutch

Warriors score seven in first two innings, beat Dutch 8-3

By Ed Patino, Staff Writer

PUBLISHED: May 10, 2007

Strong hitting lifted the Grass Lake Warriors into an early lead as they scored an 8-3 victory over the Flying Dutch in last Friday's Cascades Conference varsity softball game.

Both teams finished with nine hits, but the Warriors made theirs count early. Grass Lake plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning and then added four more in the second off Manchester pitcher Jenny Stautz for a commanding 7-1 lead.

"Jenny wasn't pitching bad, but they just hit her," Manchester coach Nikole Fether said.

Manchester (4-12, 1-6 Cascades) answered with runs in the top of the third and sixth innings. Julie Fielder's RBI double scored Hannah Caszatt in the third, then Shanel Mullins brought home Stephanie Preston with an RBI single in the sixth.

Erin Robinson opened the scoring for Manchester in the top of the first inning when she scored on a bases-loaded walk.

The Dutch had several chances to get back in the game, but stranded 10 runners on base. The key play came in the third when Manchester loaded the bases with one out, but stranded all three runners.

Fielder, Caszatt and Emily Johnson each had two hits to lead the Dutch. Mullins, Preston and Roxanne Rickert each added a hit.

Stautz lasted 1 1/3 innings and took the pitching loss. Alex Fairbanks threw the rest of the game, striking out six.

The Dutch will host Addison for a doubleheader Friday. The first game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.

Dutch vs.

Michigan Center

Missed opportunities came back to haunt the Flying Dutch in a 3-0 loss to the Michigan Center Cardinals in a Cascades game May 2.

All three runs by Michigan Center were unearned. The Cardinals scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the first, then added two more on errors in the fourth.

The Dutch stranded 11 on base in the game..

Mullins and Caszatt each had two hits to lead the Dutch, while Stautz added a double. Johnson and Rickert each had a hit. Fairbanks went the distance in the circle and took the pitching loss. The senior scattered five hits and struck out four.
