Like father, like son
Jesse Forner breaks father's record with 12-foot pole vault

Jesse Forner rewrote the history books, while the Manchester varsity track teams continued their march toward a Cascades Conference championship.

Forner broke his father's record in the pole vault, helping the Manchester boys' team to a 100-37 rout of East Jackson in a Cascades dual meet May 1. Meanwhile, freshman Elizabeth Timoszyk won three events to rally the Manchester girls to a 70 1/2-66 1/2 victory over the Trojans.
Both teams remained undefeated in Cascades meets and distanced themselves in the conference title race. Manchester was scheduled to have its final league meet Tuesday at Grass Lake.
Forner won the pole vault for the Manchester boys with his record-setting 12-0 jump. The freshman shattered the previous school record of 11-3 set by his father, current Manchester varsity track coach Mike Forner.
The Dutchmen held the top three spots in the pole vault, as George Kelly placed second at 9-0 and Bill Cloke took third with an 8-6 jump.
The Manchester boys won 12 of the 17 events in the meet. William Heslip won two individual events for the Flying Dutchmen, winning the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 17.86 seconds and the 300 hurdles in 45.23 seconds.
Greg Schaible won the 100 dash in 11.08 seconds, while Tom Crawford captured the 200 dash with a time of 23.45 seconds. Zach Greca won the 400 dash (52.68) and James Hughes took first in the 1,600 run (4:47). Sam Brown captured the high jump (5-10) for the Dutchmen.
Manchester swept the four relay races. The team of Forner, Schaible, Crawford and Brian Fargher won the 400-meter relay with a time of 46.58 seconds, while Schaible and Fargher teamed with Jake LaCross and George Kelly to win the 800 relay in 1:36.64. Hughes, Nate Hyde, Adam Colvia and Carl Wharam won the 3,200 relay in 8:58.4 and Manchester's 1,600 relay team also scored a win (3:32).
The Manchester girls' won nine events to get past East Jackson.
Timoszyk continued her breakout freshman season by winning three individual events for the Flying Dutch. She won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:33.4 and captured the 1,600 run in 5:39.8. Timoszyk ran the 3,200 run in 12:38 for another victory.
The Dutch won four of the five field events. Presly Hone won the pole vault with an 8-1 jump, while Laura Coltre took first in the long jump at 15-8 3/4. Megan Simmons captured the discus (81-11) and Kyla Willberding won the shot put (29-10) for Manchester.
Tracy Schaible ran the 400 dash in 1:04.69 for another win. Manchester won two of the relay races. The 3,200 relay team finished in 10:39.33 and the 1,600 relay squad ran a time of 4:25.2, giving the Flying Dutch two more victories.
Tuesday's meet at Grass Lake took place after the newspaper's deadline. Manchester hosts its Metric Relays on Saturday before competing in the regional meet May 18-19.
