The village will have the chance to further show its gratitude for him Sunday. An open house to celebrate Limpert's 80th birthday will take place from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the River Ridge Clubhouse.
Limpert is perhaps best known for his actions in the 1960s that helped Manchester preserve its old-time charm. During a decade of "modernization," developers were looking at purchasing buildings in the business district to give the town a more modern look. Limpert purchased several downtown buildings, including The Mill and the Comerica Bank building, to prevent the developers from "modernizing" the area.
"Don owned about 13 buildings," Manchester Village President Pat Vailliencourt said. "We owe Don a great amount of gratitude for protecting the heritage of downtown Manchester."
Even at 80 years young, Limpert remains active with the Manchester Historical Society. Along with preserving the town's heritage, Limpert preserves items celebrating the country's history.
"He has a Civil War collection that can compete with anything you see at museums across the nation," Vailliencourt said.
The River Ridge Clubhouse is located at 1000 East Duncan St. in Manchester.
