Boys break through at Trojan Relays
Dutchmen win seven events, girls finish second to host Trojans

While it hasn't been the easiest start to the season for the Manchester varsity boys track team, the Flying Dutchmen regained some of their championship form April 26.

The reigning three-time Cascades Conference champions scored 110 points as a team and took first place at the Trojans Relays at Whitmore Lake High School.
Meanwhile, the Manchester varsity girls track team continued its fine start to the campaign by placing second with 110 points, finishing just two points behind host Whitmore Lake.
In the boys competition, the Trojans finished second behind the Flying Dutchmen with 108 points. Petersburg Summerfield was third with 88. On the girls side, Birmingham Roeper was third with 100 points. Seven schools competed in the event.
The Manchester boys won seven events and placed second in five others. The Dutchmen's long jump team of Brian Fargher, Corwin and Clayton Every combined for a distance of 53-8 1/4 to take first in the event. Nate Hyde, Carl Wharam, James Hughes and Corwin Every won the distance medley relay with a time of 11:26.8, while Manchester's co-ed shuttle hurdle team of Steve and Katie Sheler, James Heslip and Katelyn Horning finished in 1:11.7 for another victory. Manchester's Taylor Heldt, Adam Colvia, Shelby Lalik and Ryan Ernst teamed up to win the co-ed sprint medley with a time of 3:01.7
The Dutchmen also scored victories in the 3,200-meter relay (9:11.3) and the 400-meter relay (46.6 seconds). The team of Colvia, Nick and Logan Ross and Chris Margraves gave Manchester a win in the Thundering Herd relay with a time of 51.1 seconds.
Manchester also placed second in five events. The team of Steve Popkey, Logan and Nick Ross won the shot put relay with a combined distance of 110-8 3/4. The Dutchmen also won the high jump event as D.J. Hone and Logan Ross combined for a height of 10-6. They also took second in the 800-meter relay (1:37.6), the sprint medley relay (1:47.6) and the freshmen/ sophomore relay (4:00.3). Manchester's 1,600-meter relay team earned a fourth-place finish with a time of 4:15.
The Manchester girls team won three events and earned six second-place finishes in the meet. The 1,600-meter relay team of Brooke Fuller, Tracy Schaible, Amanda Mutchler and Presly Hone won the event with a time of 4:25. Laura Coltre joined Fuller, Schaible and Mutchler to win the 800-meter relay in 1:51.2. The Flying Dutch also took first in the discus as the team of Kyla Wilberding, Marissa Olmstead and Megan Simmons combined for a distance of 252-4 1/2.
Wilberding and Olmstead teamed with Candice Weidmayer to place second in the shot put event with a distance of 81-2 1/4, while Coltre, Schaible and Macie Takessian finished second in the long jump at 42-6 1/4. Lalik and Ginny Garbach combined for a height of 9-2 for second place in the high jump.
The Dutch also recorded second-place finishes in the 3,200-meter relay (12:02) and the 400-meter relay (55.8 seconds).
The Manchester girls sprint medley relay team placed third with a time of 2:09.2, while the freshmen/sophomore relay squad finished in 4:46 for another third-place finish.
The teams competed in a Cascades Conference tri-meet Tuesday at Grass Lake after the newspaper's deadline. Manchester will return to action at 3 p.m. Friday in the Stockbridge Invitational.
