There was no shortage of offensive fireworks when the Manchester varsity baseball team faced the Dexter Dreadnaughts in a non-conference doubleheader April 26.

The teams combined for 49 runs and 60 hits in splitting the two games, with the Flying Dutchmen winning the opener 10-8 and Dexter bashing its way to a 21-10 extra-innings victory in the nightcap.
Both teams won their games on comebacks. Manchester (8-3, 4-0 Cascades) erased a two-run deficit in the opener, while the Dreadnaughts used an 11-run surge in the top of the eighth to complete their rally from a six-run deficit.
Dexter held a 2-1 lead in the opener, but the Dutchmen plated five runs in the bottom of the third inning to take control of the game. The advantage was short-lived, however, as the Dreadnaughts stormed back with six runs in the top of the fourth and built an 8-6 lead.
Manchester recovered in the bottom half of the frame, scoring two runs to draw even. After pitcher Brent Schriber and the Dutchmen fielders retired the Dreadnaughts over the next two innings, Manchester plated runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth to grab the lead for good. Lucas Sweet closed the game on the mound for Manchester by sitting down the Dreadnaughts in order in the top of the seventh.
Dexter out-hit the Dutchmen 15-10 for the game, but Manchester committed no errors to the Dreadnaughts' five.
Justin Welton led the attack for Manchester, going 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored. Will Rickert was 2-for-2 with three runs scored, while Isaac Miller went 2-for-3 with a RBI and run. Sweet had three RBIs and a run scored and Coyle Render added a hit, RBI and run. Jared Huber (1-for-4, run scored) and Grant Jobkar (1-for-2, RBI and run) also contributed offensively for the Dutchmen.
Schriber earned the pitching win, holding the Dreadnaughts to two hits and striking out two over the fifth and sixth innings. Trevor Hanewald started the game and struck out five, but allowed eight runs on 13 hits in four innings.
Joe Berklich went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored to lead Dexter, while Chris Marsh was 3-for-4 with a RBI and two runs. Mike Clutterbuck finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run for the Dreadnaughts.
Scott Crompton took the pitching loss in relief. Alex Krull started the game and allowed nine runs (seven earned) on 10 hits while striking out four.
Leading 5-4 after four innings in the nightcap, the Dutchmen appeared on their way to a sweep when they plated five runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend the lead. Dexter fought back with a four-run sixth, pulling to within 10-8, then forced extra innings with two more in the top of the seventh. That set the stage for the Dreadnaughts' 11-run eighth inning.
Dexter pounded out 22 hits in the game to the Dutchmen's 13. Manchester also committed four errors while Dexter was charged with one.
Josh Caswell went 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs and a run scored and Rickert was 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs to lead the Dutchmen. Jobkar was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs, while Huber added a hit, RBI and two runs. Hanewald finished 2-for-4 with a RBI and run scored for Manchester.
The Dutchmen used four pitchers in the game, with Jobkar taking the loss.
Berklich was 5-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored to lead the Dreadnaughts. Clutterbuck went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs, while Marsh was 4-for-6 with four RBIs and two runs. Crompton earned the pitching win in relief.
Dutchmen at Napoleon
The Manchester varsity baseball team remained perfect in Cascades Conference play by sweeping the Napoleon Pirates in a doubleheader April 23, winning the opener 6-4 and the nightcap 6-0.
Lucas Sweet was the story in the nightcap, going the distance on the mound and holding the Pirates to two hits while recording eight strikeouts. At one point, Sweet retired 17 straight Napoleon batters.
It was the first time this season a Manchester pitcher had a complete game.
"Lucas started slow this season, but this is what I expected from him," Manchester coach Corey Fether said. "He's got a strong arm. He didn't have to today, but he can throw a lot of pitches."
Manchester plated two runs in the bottom of the third inning, three more in the fourth and another in the fifth.
Grant Jobkar went 2-for-3 with a RBI and run scored to lead the Dutchmen. Jared Huber was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a run, while Josh Caswell went 1-for-2 and scored a run for Manchester.
Drew French had both hits for Napoleon.
The Dutchmen jumped to a 6-2 lead after 4 1/2 innings in the opener, but Napoleon came back with a run in the bottom of the fifth. The Pirates loaded the bases later in the frame, but Manchester escaped the jam without any damage. Napoleon pulled to within 6-4 in the bottom of the sixth and had its first two batters of the seventh reach base on walks. But Sweet took over on the mound and retired the Pirates for the save.
"If we can't finish it and we need to play again the next day, Lucas can come back and pitch again," Fether said. "That's why he starts the second game."
Rickert started the game and allowed four runs on nine hits and struck out five in the first six innings.
Justin Welton went 3-for-4 with a RBI and run scored to lead the Dutchmen. Isaac Miller was 2-for-3 with a RBI and run, while Caswell finished 1-for-2 with a RBI and run scored.
French went 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Pirates.
