Students in Manchester High School Science teacher Randy Smith's Plant and Soil class will again offer area residents a wide array of colorful plants during their annual green house sale beginning Monday
"The students are excited; there is a lot of plants for sale this year," Smith said.
Smith said he hopes the success of last year's sale has built momentum for this year.
"Last year we sold out pretty fast," Smith said. "It's really well received by the community."
As a hands-on science activity for high school students, Smith explained that the greenhouse sale includes marketing hanging baskets and spring plant flats grown throughout the year.
"The students do all the planting and assist with watering and monitoring throughout the year," he said.
This year, a new drip irrigation system was installed in the green house to accommodate a larger quantity of plants, Smith said.
"We have hanging baskets, bedding flats and Asiatic lilies this year," he said.
Now in its third year at the high school, Smith said the idea for a student green house came after working with one of his college professors.
"I thought it would be a fun program to bring to Manchester," he said. "It provides something unique around this area. Not too many schools have a fully functioning green house."
Smith said he brought the idea before the Manchester Community Schools Board of Education in 2005 following the completion of the new high school
"When I came up with the proposal for a green house, I was really happy they approved it," he said.
Smith said proceeds from this year's sale will go toward new equipment for the science department as well as fund science-related field trips.
"Right now we're just trying to build up the funds we do have in our account," he said. "In the future we would like to be able to offer a science scholarship to students."
In the MHS green house sale will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday beginning May 5. A special Saturday sale will take place from 9 a.m. to noon May 10. The sale will continue until all plants are sold or until the end of the school year.
