LEONARD BRETZ BRUNER

Leonard Bretz Bruner, Jr., 86, of Manchester, died April 15, 2008. He was born in Wichita Falls, Texas on Oct. 12, 1921 the son of Leonard Bretz, Sr. and Ruth Irene (Russell) Bruner.
Mr. Bruner married Lucile Rowell on Feb. 14, 1947 and she preceded him in death Sept. 26, 1999. Besides his loving wife of 52 years, he was also preceded in death by both parents, two brothers: James Craven and Grady Snuggs, and his sister Jeanette Snuggs. Mr. Bruner is survived by his daughter Caryl Stock of Manchester and many friends and colleagues.
Mr. Bruner served our country in the U.S. Navy. He graduated from the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma earning a Bachelor of Science degree and then the University of Michigan with a doctoral degree in Chemistry specializing in Polymer Chemistry. He spent some of his working life teaching chemistry at Eureka College in Illinois. He also worked for Dow Corning in research chemistry.
During his time at Dow Corning, Mr. Bruner had several patents in his name having to do with silicone chemistry. He later worked for about 20 years and retired from Stauffer-Wacker Chemical Company in Adrian which is now Wacker Chemical Corp. Mr. Bruner was a member of the American Chemical Society for over 50 years, a member and past president of the Manchester Optimist Club and a board member of the Manchester Community Resource Center. He also previously served on the Recreation Task Force and the Manchester Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Bruner was a devoted husband and father who volunteered much of his time to Girl Scouts. He was his wife and daughter's cheerleader and advisor and always a voice of reason in every endeavor.
A memorial service to celebrate Mr. Bruner's life will take place on Friday at the Emanuel United Church of Christ in Manchester beginning at 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. with Pastor Milan Maybee officiating.
Memorial contributions can be given to the Manchester Community Resource Center or the Manchester Optimist Club. Arrangements are entrusted to Borek Jennings Funeral Home, Jenter Chapel in Manchester.
