The sophomore was strong on the mound and at the plate, leading the Flying Dutchmen to an 11-2 victory over the Adrian Madison Trojans in the season opener April 10.
Hanewald pitched 4 1/3 innings for the Dutchmen, striking out 10 while holding the Trojans to one run on one hit. Offensively, Hanewald delivered two hits with an RBI and recorded a stolen base to lead Manchester (1-0).
"Trevor did what we expect him to do as a sophomore," Manchester coach Jeff Punches said. "He looked very dominant, and I expect good things from him."
Jeff Horodeczny had two hits, two RBIs and two stolen bases, while Evan Bortmas added a three-RBI triple. Clayton Every delivered a two-RBI double, while Logan Zigila finished with a hit, an RBI and a stolen base for the Dutchmen.
"I thought this was a very good start for our team," Punches said. "Our bats started slow, but I liked seeing us hit better as we went on."
The Dutchmen are scheduled to return to action Friday when they host Vandercook Lake.
The Manchester junior varsity softball team dropped a pair of high-scoring games in Friday's season-opening doubleheader, falling 14-13 and 18-16 to the Sand Creek Aggies.
Megan Bossory led the attack for Manchester (0-2), finishing the day with four hits.
In the opener, Bossory delivered two hits for the Flying Dutch. Caitlynne O'Dell, Michelle Walter and Emily Johnson each added singles. Katy Uphaus pitched five innings, striking out one and taking the loss for Manchester.
Both teams' offense remained hot in the second game. Bossory had two more hits, belting a pair of triples for Manchester, while Jordan Ridemour delivered a team-high three hits. O'Dell and Logan Cazatt each had two hits in the game, and Johnson, Walter and Chloe Miller each added a single for the Dutch.
Ridemour pitched four innings for Manchester, striking out four.
The Dutch are scheduled to play Friday at home against Vandercook Lake.
