Area residents are hoping to limit the Huron Valley Night Hawks to four weekend riding events per summer. They brought their concerns to the Manchester Township Board April 10.

Township supervisor Ron Mann announced that the Night Hawks, a motorcycle riding club based in Ypsilanti, want to open up talks with the board regarding the expansion of weekend events despite a court of appeals ruling in 1996 that limits the organization to four events. Before that ruling, the Night Hawks would sometimes hold more than 25 riding events per year, Mann said.
Richard Stefani of Sharon Hallow and Irv Shaw of Tipton presented a list of reasons why the board shouldn't meet with the Night Hawks regarding a change to the court order.
The first reason is that the case was settled after 40 years of litigation. Stefani said the group who opposes the change feels the board would be negating the time of litigation by meeting with the Night Hawks.
Two other reasons presented were that the Night Hawks have cooperated with the court order and kept their events to four per year, and that the rule is simple to follow.
"The present rule works and is easy to enforce," Stefani told the board.
The group also fears the possible use of private property. The general fear was that club members could use residential or private business property to store their motorcycles.
Having a large number of motorcycle events throughout the summer would be a disservice to area residents, Stefani added. With activities such as graduation parties, prom and family reunions taking place throughout the summer, some residents think riding events would be disruptive because of the noise.
While the board will take the residents' comments into consideration, Mann said the board would face heat if it ignored a possible meeting with the Night Hawks.
"It's our responsibility as elected officials to sit down with a representative," Mann told the audience at the meeting. "By not talking at all, we could open up more trouble."
