State crowns four champions

Kalamazoo Christian captured the Class C state championship with a 54-51 victory over Flint Beecher at Michigan State University's Breslin Center March 15.

With Kalamazoo Christian (26-1) clinging to a three-point lead, Mike VanderPloeg hit a pair of free throws with 14 seconds remaining, giving his team a 54-49 lead. Flint Beecher (19-8) got a long jumper from D'Marius Houston with seven seconds left, but Kalamazoo Christian was able to safely inbound the ball and avoid getting fouled to clinch the state title.

Kalamazoo Christian held a one-point lead after the first quarter, but used a 16-6 run in the second to build a 29-18 lead by halftime. Beecher worked its way back in the game during the third quarter, outscoring Kalamazoo Christian 14-9 and pulling to within six. The teams exchanged baskets throughout the fourth quarter, but Kalamazoo Christian was able to maintain its lead throughout.

David VaderHorst finished with 12 points to lead Kalamazoo Christian. Travis Hilton added 11 points and eight rebounds, while Stephen Gould had eight points and six rebounds.

Dominique Allen scored a game-high 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Beecher. Taron Boose added 11 points and five rebounds, while Janero Walker had six rebounds and three assists.

Class A

Saginaw 90, Detroit Pershing 71: A big run in the second quarter got Saginaw rolling and it never looked back en route to a 90-71 victory over Detroit Pershing in the Class A state championship game.

Saginaw (27-1) jumped out to a 10-point lead by the end of the first quarter, then erupted for 29 points in the second quarter, building a 51-33 lead by halftime. The teams continued to play high-scoring quarters in the second half, but Saginaw maintained a double-digit lead until the final horn.

Three players scored over 20 points for Saginaw. Mike Green led the way with a game-high 29 points. Draymond Green recorded a double-double, scoring 21 points and grabbed 19 rebounds, while Daniel West added 21 points and six assists.

Demetrius Ward had 23 points and six rebounds to lead Detroit Pershing (22-5). Keith Appling added 17 points and five rebounds, while Derrick Nix had 12 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double.

Class B

Lansing Catholic 54, Flint Powers Catholic 53: Trailing by one with 12 seconds remaining, Max Grover gave Lansing Catholic (23-4) the lead for good when he buried a jumper. Patrick O'Brien tried to answer with a three-pointer at the buzzer for Flint Powers Catholic (20-8), but the shot fell short.

Michael Repovz led the way for Lansing Catholic with a double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Austin Nichols added 16 points, while Michael Murray had 13 points.

Shane Moreland scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Flint Powers Catholic.

Class D

Muskegon Western Michigan Christian 58, Detroit City 57: Charlie Van Rees had 16 points to lead MWMC (24-3). Ray Hill scored a game-high 23 points to lead Detroit City (21-5).
