Weather postpones opening day

Snow wipes out most of first week, baseball, softball open April 8

By Ed Patino, Staff Writer

PUBLISHED: March 27, 2008

The spring snowstorm that hit Michigan last weekend didn't just wreck havoc on area roads.

Inclement weather also pushed back opening day for several spring sports.

The first three games of the Manchester varsity baseball and softball team's season were wiped out because of the snow and poor field conditions. Unless the weather and playing surfaces improve over the next two days, Friday's season-opening meet for the Manchester varsity boys golf team is also in jeopardy.

Both the varsity baseball and softball teams were scheduled to open the season this week with non-conference games. Manchester was to kick off the spring season Tuesday with doubleheaders at Morenci, then play today at Sand Creek. The weather and field conditions forced the cancellation of all baseball and softball games this week.

The teams will wait until April 8 to open the season, as the varsity baseball and softball teams travel to Adrian Madison. Both are single games, which are scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. Manchester will have its home opener April 10 when the baseball and softball teams face Whitmore Lake for non-conference games.

If Friday's meet is postponed, the Manchester varsity boys golf team will begin its first-ever spring season April 8 by competing in a Cascades Conference jamboree hosted by Grass Lake. That same day is also the scheduled season opener for the Manchester junior varsity baseball and softball teams. Both will open the campaign at home against Adrian Madison, host Sand Creek the next day, then visit Whitmore Lake on April 10. Golf is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. while JV baseball and softball starts at 4:30 p.m.

One Manchester team was able to open the season Tuesday as originally scheduled, as the varsity track team competed at the Spartan Relays at Michigan State University. See the April 3 edition of the Manchester Enterprise for complete results of the event. The next track meet for Manchester is scheduled for April 8 at Adrian Madison.

Opening day for middle school track is scheduled for April 9. Manchester will begin the season on the road against Cascades Conference rival Michigan Center.
