Four teams capture state championships

Saginaw Nouvel rides fourth quarter surge to Class C state title

Strong finishes to both halves propelled Saginaw Nouvel to a 73-42 victory over Galesburg-Augusta in the Class C girls basketball state championship game March 1 at the Eastern Michigan University Convocation Center.

Holding a one-point lead after the first quarter, Saginaw Nouvel took control in the second quarter with a 14-4 run which staked Nouvel to a 28-17 lead at halftime.

After the teams combined for 38 points in the third quarter, Nouvel put the game away with a 23-9 run in the fourth and walked away with the state championship.

Kelly Kratz finished with a game-high 20 points to lead Saginaw Nouvel (24-1). Jenny Ryan set an MHSAA finals record by forcing 12 steals to go with her 15 points. Kate McDonald scored 12 points for Nouvel.

Felicia Standley scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead Galesburg-Augusta (22-6).

Class A Final

Grosse Pointe North 58, East Lansing 46: A fourth quarter surge lifted Grosse Pointe North to the Class A girls basketball state championship March 1 at the Eastern Michigan University Convocation Center.

Clinging to a two-point lead entering the fourth quarter, Grosse Pointe North (24-4) used a 22-12 run in the final frame to put the game out of reach.

Ariel Braker scored 15 points, grabbed 16 rebounds, handed out five assists and forced eight steals to lead the Norsemen. Jasmine Kennedy added 13 points and eight rebounds, while Kelly DeFauw finished with 11 points for Grosse Pointe North.

East Lansing (25-2) had three players score in double figures. Klarissa Bell led the way with 14 points and six rebounds. Sami Tucker had 12 points and five rebounds, while Rachel Woodruff added 10 points and four assists for East Lansing.

Class B Final

Detroit Country Day 46, Detroit Community 40: Detroit Community's bid for an undefeated season ended in the state championship game as Country Day held on to win the Class B girls basketball title March 1.

Amber Moore scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Country Day (25-1), while Sharena Taylor added 10 points and five rebounds. Madison Williams grabbed eight rebounds and blocked eight shots to go with her six points for Country Day.

Crystal Bradford scored a game-high 18 points to lead Community (25-1). She also grabbed five rebounds and recorded five steals. Inqiuia Snell had 13 points and six rebounds, while Nya Jordan added six points, eight rebounds and four steals for Detroit Community.

Class D Final

New Lathrop 42, Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart 36: Kayla Gross broke a 31-31 tie with a three-pointer with 2:16 remaining, putting New Lathrop ahead for good in the Class D girls basketball state championship game March 1.

Gross finished with 19 points and five rebounds to lead New Lathrop (27-1). Kayla Knieper added 11 points and four rebounds, while Monica Confer had seven points and nine rebounds.

Kelsey DeNoyelles scored 14 points and grabbed four rebounds to lead Sacred Heart (25-2). Chelsea Mills added six points and seven rebounds, while Rachel Jaksa handed out six assists.
