A fire nearly gutted a home Monday afternoon on Bartlett Road in Bridgewater Township.
More than two dozen firefighters from four departments were called to battle the blaze at the 1920s-era brick structure at 13024 Bartlett Road.
Clinton Fire Chief Dennis Keezer said that an investigation would begin that afternoon to try to determine the cause of the blaze.
The brick outer structure was relatively unscathed, but the interior was a blackened ruin.
"The fire had not broken through the roof, but the first and second floors were pretty well gutted," Keezer said. "These brick-and block structures just hold the heat in."
Neighbors said the occupants, Jim and Sandy Brissette, had been out of town when the fire occurred, but were contacted and were on their way home.
A total of 26 firefighters from Clinton, Manchester Township, Sand Lake and Tecumseh responded to the blaze, which was reported at 1:10 p.m. by a passing motorist who noticed smoke coming from the second-floor windows.
According to Keezer, the fire was declared under control at 1:55 p.m. and completely out at 2:10 p.m.
There were no injuries to any fire personnel. No dollar estimate of the damage was available.
