The freshman was perfect from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter and helped the Flying Dutchmen rally for a 50-47 victory over the Trojans in the season finale for both Cascades Conference rivals.
After trailing throughout the first half, Manchester (9-11, 7-7 Cascades) tightened its defense in the second half, holding the Trojans to 18 points over the final two quarters. East Jackson carried a 40-36 lead entering the fourth quarter, but the Dutchmen dissolved the Trojans' defense and scored 14 points in the frame to rally. Blades took advantage of his trips to the free-throw line, going 8-for-8 from the stripe in the quarter for Manchester.
"We played poor defense in the first half and dug ourselves a hole," Manchester coach Corey Fether said. "East Jackson is a much-improved team, but we held them to 18 points in the second half to pull out a win."
Blades recorded a double-double to lead the Dutchmen, scoring 14 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Brent Schriber added 10 points and five rebounds, while Logan Zigila scored nine points. Brandon Casey had six points and D.J. Hone tossed in four points. Lukas Weber scored two points and grabbed four rebounds, while Jesse Forner had three points. Dutchmen at Grass Lake
Depth paid dividends for the Manchester junior varsity boys' basketball team.
Three players scored in double figures to lift the Flying Dutchmen to a 52-40 victory over the Grass Lake Warriors in a Cascades Conference game Feb. 19 at the Joe Bechtel Athletic Complex.
According to Manchester coach Corey Fether, the ability of his team to attack the post and come up with timely defensive stops was the key for the Dutchmen's victory.
"Our dribble penetration allowed for many back-side layups," Fether said. "We played good defense in the first and third quarters."
Brent Schriber had 14 points and nine rebounds to lead Manchester. Josh Blades added 11 points and nine rebounds, while Logan Zigila scored 10 points, grabbed six rebounds and handed out seven assists.
Jesse Forner added four points and Lukas Weber had three points. D.J. Hone scored two points and grabbed four rebounds, while Ryan Lenhart, Brandon Casey, Dakota LaDouceur and Rob Carver each had two points for the Flying Dutchmen.
