Cooking show benefits PTO

Chef Sheila Rae set to teach area parents how to cook healthier

By Alana West, Special Writer

Taking a page from the culinary artists of the Food Network, ordinary dinner preparation will be spotlighted with Klager Elementary School's first Parent-Teacher Organization-sponsored cooking show fund-raiser in April.

Vendors and sponsors are sought to participate in the event, which will feature local chef Sheila Rae, who travels the country to teach at professional cooking shows. Her motivational lessons show audiences how to cook the perfect meal, and create healthy dinners out of common household items.

"We wanted to do something different," Deb Beagle, event co-organizer and PTO parent, said.

Beagle, along with Jennifer Crouch, who is credited with the cooking show idea, said she wanted the event to stress the importance of healthy eating.

"We wanted to have cooking that is healthy," she said.

Beagle said she saw Rae's show at the Washtenaw County Women's Expo and was impressed with her style with food. She said that one of the "treats" of the show will be to challenge Rae to create a delicious meal with the contents of a chosen audience member's refrigerator.

"We will have that person bring in leftovers, visible in their own Tupperware containers," she said. "Then she will create a whole new meal from it, using her cooking knowledge."

Audience members may also be asked to help prepare or sample food, and take part in a raffle drawing. While Rae is cooking on the stage, a large, live screen behind her will show details of what she is doing during the meal-preparation process.

"(Rae) is used to being in front of a crowd, and since this is our first (show), we wanted it to be as professional as possible," Beagle said. "We don't know what we're doing. It is uncharted territory."

Tickets for the event will be $15 presale, and $17 at the door. The event is planned for 5:30 p.m. April 19 in the Manchester High School Atrium. All proceeds will support the Klager PTO.

Those interested in participating as a vendor or sponsor should contact Beagle at 428-0733, or Crouch at 428-8783.
