Putting together a dominant defensive effort in the second half, the Flying Dutchmen rallied for a 44-38 road victory over the Napoleon Pirates in a Cascades Conference game Feb. 13.
Finding themselves in a 27-21 hole at the break, the Dutchmen needed to make an adjustment on defense. They did just that, holding the Pirates to 11 points in the second half.
"I was really happy to see the boys commit to the defensive end," Manchester coach Brad Gerbe said. "We had some breakdowns in the first half, but we made the adjustments and outplayed them in the second half."
As the Dutchmen began their rally, Napoleon went cold. The Pirates were limited to five points in the third quarter, and then managed just six points in the fourth.
Manchester showcased its depth at both ends of the floor. Ryan Lenhart scored 10 points to lead the Dutchmen, while Brent Schriber added eight points. Playing one of his first games at point guard, Matt Johnson scored eight points and forced three steals.
"It's nice to see kids handle different roles and accept the responsibility," Gerbe said.
Rob Carver had seven points and six rebounds, while Luke Weber scored five points and grabbed five rebounds for Manchester. Gerbe also credited D.J. Hone and Brandon Skiener for strong defensive play.
Manchester travels to Blissfield today, then plays at East Jackson Friday. Staff Writer Ed Patino can be reached at 428-8173 or epatino@heritage.com.
