With only one week left before one of the area's largest fund-raisers, members of the Kiwanis Club of Manchester are hurriedly preparing for the ninth annual Crazy Ca$h Night set for March 1.

"It's a big fund-raiser that the community has been very supportive with," Kiwanis member Dana Andrews said. "Over the past several years, we've donated over $100,000 back to fund various group projects."
Andrews said this year, it's no surprise that the enthusiasm in the Manchester Kiwanis Club is contagious because the raffle promises to reach out wider than ever into the community.
"We have 12 groups who applied for help this year," he said.
Among the recipients are: Manchester Co-Op Preschool, $750 for a drying rack for artwork and large building blocks; the Manchester Area Chamber of Commerce, $1,000 for new downtown Christmas decorations; Manchester Athletic Boosters, $2,500 for a seating platform at the track field for seniors; Manchester Early Childhood Center, $5,000 for playground equipment; Manchester District Library, $1,000 for construction on an adult reading area; the Manchester Township Volunteer Fire Department, $1,560 for a machine for training; Riverfolk Music and Arts Organization, $500 for the Riverfolk Festival; Manchester High School Science Department, $500 for chemicals for chemistry labs; Manchester Soccer Association, $500 for soccer goals and rebounder; the First Steps program, $400 for equipment; Early Childhood Special Education, $725 for voice output communication devices and the Manchester Key Club, $500 for a student scholarship.
Andrews said roughly $14,935 will be given back to the community.
"Several groups submitted applications earlier in the year and after we got together and voted, these were the groups we decided to donate to this year," he said. "We try to accommodate everyone and spread the money out over seniors, children and the public."
In the past, groups including the Manchester Area Youth Sports, Community Resource Center, Manchester Community Fair and the Klager Elementary PTO all benefited from the group's generosity.
"Some people are more interested in the benefits the raffle produces for the community than the actual prize," Andrews said.
This year, the $100 tickets - which guarantee entrance to the event at the American Legion Hall, a chance at $5,000 cash and dinner for two at the event catered by Dan's River Grill are available at Edward Jones Investments, the Coffee Mill CafÈ and Andrews Family Chiropractic.
The first prize of $5,000 will be awarded to the final ticket drawn from the hopper. Second prize of $1,000 will go to the next-to-last ticket holder and $250 will be awarded to the last ticket holder.
"The final ticket holders have the option of splitting the money up between each other," Andrews said.
In addition, a variety of side board opportunities, with tickets of $5 to $20 apiece, give participants extra chances to win cash and merchandise prizes.
The event starts promptly at 6 p.m. For more information, contact Andrews at 428-0550.
"It's going to be a lot of fun and a lot of raffling for a great cause," Andrews said.
