The Flying Dutch put their depth on display Monday and swept to a 25-13, 25-23, 25-18 victory over the East Jackson Trojans on Senior Night at Manchester High School.
Manchester coach Mike Mininger recently went in for heart surgery and missed the match. Manchester Athletic Director Wes Gall, who also serves as football coach, was the acting volleyball coach Monday.
"It brought back some old memories," said Gall, who coached high school volleyball in the past. "When I coached, we didn't have rally scoring, so some of the things I blurted out are untrue now. But Mike has the girls well organized, so I don't think it was much of a problem."
It's not confirmed when Mininger will return to the bench, though he was expected to be released soon from the hospital.
Manchester (17-17-4, 4-2 Cascades) got off to a fast start in all three games, but had to withstand an East Jackson rally each time.
The Dutch made a late surge to win the first game, then picked up where they left off in the second. Early in the game, Ashley Zigila served seven consecutive points for Manchester, but the Trojans fought back to grab a short-lived lead.
After the teams exchanged points, the Dutch broke open a 22-21 game with three of the final five points, taking the win.
Manchester raced to an 11-point lead in the third game and coasted to the sweep.
"I think the girls had a good time," Gall said. "It was fun and hopefully I wasn't a deterrent."
Julie Fielder led Manchester's attack with nine kills, four digs and 14 service points. Stacey Volk added seven points, five kills and 14 assists, while Zigila served 12 points. Hannah Caszatt blasted six kills and served 12 points for the Dutch.
Ally Way served 14 points for Manchester, while Amanda Mutchler had nine service points. Crystal Poertner had seven points and Laura Coltre made 10 digs. Shanel Mullins finished with six digs.
Last night's match at Napoleon took place after the newspaper's deadline. The Dutch will compete in the Cascades Conference tournament Feb. 22 at Michigan Center.
