Dutchmen rally in fourth for victory over Addison

Blades and Zigila lead Manchester in pair of conference victories

By Ed Patino, Staff Writer

PUBLISHED: February 14, 2008

The dynamic duo of Logan Zigila and Josh Blades brought the Manchester junior varsity boys team to a 66-58 victory over the Addison Panthers in a Cascades Conference game Feb. 8.

The game was played at Manchester Middle School to accommodate the Cascades Conference wrestling tournament, which was held at the high school.

The Dutchmen trailed for most of the game as Addison scored 20 points in the first quarter and tacked on 19 more in the third to build a 50-42 lead.

"Our defense was poor in the first and third quarters," Manchester coach Corey Fether said. "Addison is a much improved team and they shot the ball well."

It was Manchester that heated up in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Panthers 24-8 to take the victory.

Zigila and Blades scored 21 points apiece to lead the Dutchmen. Blades also grabbed 12 rebounds for a double-double and forced five steals. Zigila was a perfect 4-for-4 on three-pointers.

Jesse Forner added nine points and six rebounds, while Brent Schriber had six points and four rebounds. Rob Carver scored five points and grabbed seven rebounds. Ryan Lenhart and D.J. Hone each threw in two points for Manchester.

The Dutchmen traveled to Ann Arbor Greenhills for a non-conference game Tuesday after the newspaper's deadline. They return to Cascades play today when they host Hanover-Horton.

Dutchmen vs. Vandercook Lake

Cold free throw shooting nearly cost the Manchester junior varsity boys basketball team, but the Flying Dutchmen held on for a 51-42 victory over the Vandercook Lake Jayhawks in a Cascades Conference game Feb. 4.

Manchester was in control for most of the game, but struggled at the free-throw line. The Dutchmen missed 19 shots from the stripe on the night, which allowed the Jayhawks to get back into the game in the fourth quarter before Manchester held them off.

"We had a nice defensive effort through three quarters," Manchester coach Corey Fether said. "We could've sealed the win very early by making free throws."

Josh Blades finished with 17 points and nine rebounds to lead the Dutchmen. He also recorded four steals. Brent Schriber added 12 points and five rebounds, while Rob Carver had eight points and seven rebounds. Brandon Casey scored six points and Jesse Forner had five points and five steals. Ryan Lenhart had three points, while Logan Zigila handed out four assists for Manchester.
