A slow start proved too much for the Manchester junior varsity girls' basketball team to overcome.

Despite making a late rally and getting contributions throughout their lineup, the Flying Dutch were dealt a 61-47 loss to the Hanover-Horton Comets in a Cascades Conference game Feb. 7.

Manchester fell into an early hole and was forced to play catch-up the entire game. The Comets built a nine-point lead by the end of the first quarter, then remained hot on offense with a 21-point second quarter.

Hanover-Horton carried a 37-17 lead into halftime.

The Dutch had a better second half. After playing even with the Comets in the third quarter, Manchester erupted for 19 points in the fourth. The Dutch made a small run to get back within striking distance, but Hanover-Horton prevented them from cutting the lead down to single digits.

For the game, Manchester grabbed 35 rebounds and forced the Comets into 24 turnovers.

Taylor Parks finished with 12 points, five rebounds and six steals to lead the Flying Dutch. Amanda Davis added eight points and three steals, while Kristen Lewis had six points, three rebounds and three steals. Tabitha Withrow scored five points and grabbed eight rebounds. Taylor Heldt and Amanda Barker each had four points and three steals. Logan Caszatt pulled down nine rebounds to go with two points and Stephanie Steele had three points for Manchester.

RaeAnn Negus scored a game-high 18 points to lead Hanover-Horton. Rosie Wendt added 14 points, while Emily Wozek had eight points. Jordan Kellogg and Samantha Utter each scored six points for the Comets.

The Dutch traveled to Grass Lake for a league game after the newspaper's deadline Tuesday. Manchester plays its final game of the season Friday when it hosts East Jackson.

Dutch vs. Blissfield

The Manchester junior varsity girls' basketball team had a strong finish to make up for a flat start in a 48-43 victory over the Blissfield Royals in a non-conference game Feb. 4.

Trailing by nine after three quarters, the Flying Dutch rallied with an 18-4 run in the fourth quarter to take the victory.

Manchester struggled early in the game, and Blissfield built a 12-6 lead after the first quarter. The teams played an even second quarter, but the Royals extended their lead to 39-30 by the end of the third before the Dutch came to life.

Two players scored in double figures for Manchester. Amanda Barker led the way with a game-high 15 points. She also grabbed five rebounds. Taylor Parks added 11 points and four steals, while Tabitha Withrow had eight points and eight rebounds. Taylor Heldt scored five points, grabbed four rebounds and forced five steals. Logan Caszatt had 10 rebounds and four points, while Amanda Davis had three points and five steals. Kelsey Heimerdinger scored two points for the Flying Dutch.

Olivia Keinath had 11 points to lead the Royals. Mackenzie Madsen added nine points, while Jenna Goetz had eight points. Megan Knierim scored six points for Blissfield.
