In its first meeting of the season with the Addison Panthers, the Manchester girls basketball team showed that it could compete with one of the Cascades Conference leaders.

The second time was a different story as a big third quarter helped Addison sprint to a 62-43 victory over the Flying Dutch in a league game Feb. 8.
Manchester (6-12, 4-8 Cascades) dropped its third straight game. It finishes out the regular season Friday against East Jackson, then opens Class C district play Monday at Clinton against the host Redskins.
Meanwhile, Addison (13-5, 8-4) picked up its fourth straight victory and gave head coach Tory VanSickle a victory on his birthday.
The Dutch pulled to within four points on Amanda Mutchler's basket two minutes into the third quarter, but that would be as close as it would get. Addison used its press defense and up-tempo offense to spark a 32-5 run that lasted until the midway point of the fourth quarter.
Manchester coach Cori Kastel was disappointed with her team's performance.
"Mentally we weren't in it and we lost confidence once things started to go wrong," Kastel said. "No one could take their pressure, and they scored all their points off turnovers. Addison's full-court press killed us."
Both teams ran into foul trouble in the first quarter. Addison was called for six fouls in the first two and a half minutes, and consecutive baskets by Stephanie Preston and Mutchler gave the Dutch an 8-3 lead. Manchester was called for six of the next seven fouls, allowing the Panthers to close the quarter on a 10-3 run.
The teams exchanged baskets during the first half of the second quarter. Cheyenne Halliwill buried a three-pointer, giving Addison a 21-16 lead, but Laura Coltre answered with a missile of her own 20 seconds later. The Dutch went cold after that, however, and Addison took advantage of trips to the free-throw line during a 7-1 run to close the half. Aimee Ruby's finger roll in the final seconds gave the Panthers a 28-20 lead at the break.
"We got into foul trouble and it took us a few minutes to figure things out," VanSickle said. "I thought we did a great job responding."
A putback by Julie Fielder and two free throws and a jumper by Mutchler pulled Manchester to within 30-26 early in the third quarter before Addison began its big run. Dana Cook got it started with a jumper and two free throws, then Shaneh Halliwill sank a three-pointer, making it 37-28.
Addison's press continued to force Manchester turnovers, and the Panthers extended their lead. Cook scored a putback and three-pointer, then Halliwill's inside basket with 1:53 left in the quarter made it 49-28.
Cook scored the first six points of the fourth quarter for the Panthers before Fielder answered with a free throw for Manchester. Cook capped the run with a three-pointer, making it 62-30.
"We felt good at halftime, then Manchester scores the first four points of the third quarter," VanSickle said. "I don't know what happened after that, but we just went on a run."
The Dutch scored the final 13 points of the game. Mutchler's basket with 2:56 remaining was Manchester's first field goal since her jumper early in the third quarter. Tracy Schaible hit consecutive baskets, then Emily Lobbestael sank a three-pointer. Emily Werner capped the game with a traditional three-point play.
Mutchler recorded a double-double to lead the Dutch, scoring 15 points and grabbing a season-high 18 rebounds. Coltre added seven points and four steals, while Fielder had five points and eight rebounds. Schaible scored five points and handed out five assists. Preston and Lobbestael each had four points and Megan Bossory grabbed five rebounds for Manchester.
Cook scored a game-high 17 points to lead Addison. Shaneh Halliwill added 11 points, while Katie Dowling and Drue Alexa Wagner each added eight points. Cheyenne Halliwill scored five points for the Panthers.
"We need to put this behind us and can't dwell on the past," Kastel said. "We have to build on these last couple of games to get ready for districts."
Dutch vs. Hanover-Horton
The Hanover-Horton Comets needed a late fourth quarter push to escape with a 60-52 victory over the Manchester varsity girls basketball team in a Cascades Conference game Feb. 7.
The Flying Dutch hung with the Cascades Conference leaders throughout the game. Trailing by five after the first quarter, Manchester erupted for 18 points in the second and pulled to within 31-30 by halftime. The teams played an even third quarter, but the Comets outscored the Dutch 14-9 in the fourth to take the win.
Amanda Mutchler finished with 13 points and nine rebounds to lead the Dutch. Stephanie Ball added 10 points, while Laura Coltre had nine points and three assists. Julie Fielder scored seven points and grabbed seven rebounds for Manchester.
Samantha Rando scored a game-high 21 points to lead Hanover-Horton. Alyssa Harris added 18 points and Ashley Fausneaucht had 11 points for the Comets.
