Foul trouble was the undoing for the Flying Dutch in a 49-38 loss to the Jayhawks in a Cascades Conference game Jan. 29.
Manchester (6-9, 3-7 Cascades) was charged with 31 fouls in the game to 16 infractions against the Jayhawks. Likewise, Vandercook Lake made 42 trips to the line, making 23 shots while the Flying Dutch were 5-for-12 from the stripe on the night.
"The fouls killed us," Manchester coach Katie Bennett said. "We were not poised and (were) sloppy defensively, and (Vandercook Lake) turned our fouls into easy baskets and free throws."
The Dutch got off to a good start and emerged from a tightly-played first quarter with a 9-7 lead. The foul trouble began in the second quarter, and the Jayhawks took advantage by scoring 15 points in the frame to take a 22-17 lead into halftime.
"We started out fine, but from the second quarter on, it was foul after foul," Bennett said. "Things went downhill from there."
The teams played a near even third quarter. The Dutch reduced their full-court press, resulting in fewer fouls. Manchester matched scores with the Jayhawks throughout the frame and kept within striking distance, entering the fourth quarter 35-29.
The foul trouble returned in the fourth quarter, however, and Vandercook Lake outscored the Dutch 14-9 down the stretch to put the game away.
Amanda Davis scored 10 points and grabbed three rebounds to lead Manchester. Logan Caszatt had eight points and 10 rebounds, while Taylor Parks added six points and six rebounds. Chelsea Barker scored six points and Taylor Heldt had five points, seven rebounds and four steals. Tabitha Withrow grabbed eight rebounds and blocked two shots for the Flying Dutch.
"Offensively we did fine, but we have to stop with the fouls," Bennett said.
Chelsea Collins finished with a game-high 15 points for Vandercook Lake, while Erica Dunckel added 14 points.
The Dutch hosted Blissfield for a non-conference game Monday after the newspaper's deadline. Manchester will play on consecutive nights today and Friday. It hosts Hanover-Horton today, then faces Addison in a makeup game that was originally scheduled for Feb. 1.
The Addison game will take place at Manchester Middle School. The Cascades Conference wrestling meet is being held at Manchester High School and is the back end of a rare boy-girl basketball doubleheader. The Manchester junior varsity boys' team will play Addison at 5 p.m. with the JV girls' game starting approximately a half-hour after the conclusion of the boys' game.
