The senior hit a three-pointer at the buzzer Friday, lifting the Flying Dutchmen to an exciting 47-45 comeback victory over the East Jackson Trojans in a Cascades Conference game.
Manchester (3-9, 2-5 Cascades) has won three of its last four games after opening the season with eight straight losses. East Jackson (7-5, 5-2 Cascades) entered the game tied for first place in the conference with Hanover-Horton, but the Dutchmen dropped the Trojans into second.
Trailing 45-44 with five seconds left, the Dutchmen had a chance to win it, but Zach Benedict's jumper missed. Manchester caught a break when an East Jackson player tipped the ball out of bounds. With 1.7 seconds remaining, Nick Ball inbounded the ball to a cutting Schaible, who buried a 23-footer for the win.
"Nick was patient on the inbound and Greg made a great cut," Manchester coach Bryan Barnard said. "I don't think there's been a bigger shot in our gym."
The Dutchmen trailed 42-34 entering the fourth quarter, but tightened their defense and held East Jackson to three points the rest of the way. Meanwhile, Schaible hit three of his five triples in the fourth quarter, sparking Manchester's rally.
"We did a nice job on defense and caused turnovers," Barnard said. "We're playing better and hopefully that continues this week."
Jake LaCross scored Manchester's first seven points of the game as the teams exchanged baskets.
East Jackson built a three-point lead by the end of the first quarter, then entered halftime with a 28-23 lead.
Schaible finished the game with 21 points and five steals. LaCross went 6-for-8 from the floor and finished with 15 points on the night.
Randy Kleinschmidt scored six points for the Dutchmen, while Sam Brown grabbed six rebounds. Ball-handed out six assists for Manchester.
The Dutchmen travel to Grass Lake on Friday.
Dutch vs. Hanover-Horton
A slow start hurt the Flying Dutchmen in a 68-37 loss to Cascades Conference-leading Hanover-Horton Jan. 23.
The Comets held Manchester to four field goals in the first half. Hanover raced to a 21-point lead after the first quarter, and then increased its advantage to 41-12 at halftime.
The Dutchmen stayed even with Hanover-Horton in the second half.
Greg Schaible scored 11 points to lead the Dutchmen. Kevin Fielder added four points and nine rebounds, while Zack Ysassi, Justin Welton and Andrew Tindall each scored three points for Manchester.
