The Flying Dutch were held to 18 percent shooting on the night and were handed a 42-19 loss to the Napoleon Pirates in a Cascades Conference game Jan. 24.
Manchester fell into an early eight-point deficit in the first quarter and never recovered. Napoleon put the game out of reach with a 14-5 run to open the second quarter.
For the game, the Dutch were 8-for-43 from the floor (18.6 percent), including 5-for-24 on shots 10 feet or less from the basket.
"We couldn't score and the shots were not falling," Manchester coach Katie Bennett said. "They got the jump on us early and we couldn't get it back."
The Pirates held a 12-4 lead after the first quarter, then used a 9-2 run to build a 15-point lead. Napoleon continued to shut down the Dutch in the third quarter and extended its lead to 35-11 by the end of the frame.
Manchester had its best quarter in the fourth, scoring eight points and playing even with the Pirates, but was unable to get within striking distance.
The Dutch only made six trips to the free-throw line in the game, making three. Meanwhile, Napoleon finished 4-for-11 from the charity stripe. For the game, the Pirates held a 24-10 advantage in points in the paint, while their bench outscored Manchester 19-6.
"The girls played hard and Napoleon is a very good team," Bennett said. "But we could've played better."
Amanda Barker, Taylor Parks and Kristen Lewis each scored four points to lead Manchester. Parks also grabbed seven rebounds and forced four steals, while Barker and Lewis grabbed three rebounds apiece. Tabitha Withrow had nine rebounds to go with three points and Stephanie Steele had two rebounds, six rebounds and three steals for the Flying Dutch.
Alexis Brautigam and Sabrina Garrison each scored 10 points to lead Napoleon. Chelsea Miller added five points, while Andrea Smith and Danielle Hein each had four points for Napoleon.
The Dutch traveled to Vandercook Lake after the newspaper's deadline Tuesday. Manchester visits Addison for a Cascades Conference game Friday.
Dutch at Ann Arbor Greenhills
A dominant defense negated a sluggish offense for the Manchester junior varsity girls' basketball team in a 22-12 victory over the Ann Arbor Greenhills Gryphons in a non-conference game Jan. 22.
The Flying Dutch jumped to a 12-3 lead by the end of the first quarter, but were held to one point over the next two quarters. Manchester's defense helped it maintain a four-point lead entering the fourth quarter, where the Dutch closed the game with a 9-3 run to take the victory.
"We started off good offensively in the first quarter, but we just shut down in the second," Manchester coach Katie Bennett said. "We couldn't put the ball in the hoop. Defensively we played strong, but we need to start scoring more."
Manchester did have more success inside, outscoring the Gryphons 16-6 in the paint. Its bench also outscored Greenhills 13-1.
Tabitha Withrow recorded a double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing 12 rebounds to lead the Dutch. Amanda Barker added six points, three rebounds and four steals, while Taylor Parks had two points and five rebounds. Chelsea Barker finished with two points and four steals for Manchester.
Julie Lignenfelter scored five points to lead Greenhills.
