Dominating at both ends of the court from the onset, the Flying Dutch stormed to a 47-16 victory over the Michigan Center Cardinals in a Cascades Conference game at Manchester High School.
After being held to less than 30 points in each of its previous three games, Manchester (5-7, 3-5 Cascades) nearly matched that in the first half alone. The Dutch opened the game with a 13-1 run, using a balanced offensive attack combined with an aggressive defense. Manchester remained hot in the second quarter and took a 26-5 lead into halftime.
"This was a good game for us to get our confidence back," Manchester coach Katie Bennett said. "Everyone in the lineup scored and it was a great team effort."
Bennett cleared her bench in the second half, but the Dutch maintained their execution. Manchester outscored the Cardinals 11-6 in the third quarter, then 10-5 in the fourth to finish the game.
Tabitha Withrow finished with a game-high 12 points to lead Manchester. She also grabbed three rebounds and forced two steals. Jordan Ridenour added six points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals, while Stephanie Steele had six points, eight rebounds and two steals. Chelsea Barker came off the bench to score five points, force three steals and block three shots.
"Chelsea stepped up when she came in and did a great job running the point," Bennett said.
Taylor Parks had four points, five rebounds and two assists for the Dutch. Amanda Barker added four points and four rebounds, while Jenny Kempher had three points, five rebounds and three assists. Kristen Lewis grabbed seven rebounds, two points and two assists and Taylor Heldt had two points, three rebounds and four steals for Manchester.
Dutch at East Jackson
With defense dominating the game, the East Jackson Trojans made their run in the fourth quarter and pulled out a 29-22 victory over the Flying Dutch in a Cascades Conference game Jan. 15.
Both teams were cold from the floor in the first half, and East Jackson went into the break clinging to an 11-10 lead. Manchester kept it close in the third quarter despite cold shooting and a lack of trips to the free-throw line, but the Trojans outscored the Dutch 8-3 in the fourth to take the game.
Manchester made only one trip to the charity stripe in the fourth quarter. The Dutch finished 1-for-2 at the line, while East Jackson was 5-for-25 from the line on the night.
Amanda Barker finished with eight points to lead the Dutch. She also grabbed six rebounds and forced two steals. Tabitha Withrow added six points, nine rebounds and two steals, while Amanda Davis had three points, six rebounds and two steals. Logan Caszatt and Stephanie Steele each scored two points and forced two steals, with Caszatt also grabbing two rebounds. Taylor Heldt grabbed three rebounds and blocked two shots for Manchester.
