A fall into the doldrums for one quarter prevented the Manchester junior varsity boys' basketball team from putting together its first winning streak of the season.

Despite stronger defense and better execution on offense than in previous games, it was not enough for the Flying Dutchmen in a 45-29 loss to the Hanover-Horton Comets in a Cascades Conference game Jan. 11 before a big crowd at Hanover-Horton High School.
Manchester (2-7, 1-4 Cascades) kept pace with the Comets in the first quarter, but was unable to maintain the momentum in the second. Hanover-Horton outscored the Dutchmen 9-2 in the frame and built a double-digit lead by halftime. Manchester went cold from the field in the third quarter, allowing the Comets to extend their lead and coast to the victory.
"We played another poor second quarter," Manchester coach Corey Fether said. "We got good shots all night, but we just couldn't put the ball in the basket."
The Dutchmen actually improved in many areas in the game despite the result. Defensively, the team forced Hanover-Horton into 25 turnovers on the night. Meanwhile, the Dutchmen took better care of the basketball and cut down on turnovers. Manchester committed a season low 16 turnovers in the game.
Josh Blades led the attack for the Dutchmen, scoring 11 points and grabbing four rebounds. Brandon Casey added seven points, while Jesse Forner had six points. D.J. Hone finished with four points for Manchester.
The Dutchmen return to action today when they host the Grass Lake Warriors for a Cascades Conference game. The game tips off a 5:30 p.m. with the varsity game between the schools taking place approximately a half hour following the JV contest.
Dutchmen vs. Addison
A big night from Josh Blades helped the Flying Dutchmen snap a five-game losing streak with a 42-31 victory over the Addison Panthers in a Cascades Conference game Jan. 8.
Defense sparked the offense for Manchester throughout the game. On the night, the Dutchmen forced the Panthers into 21 turnovers, many of which were turned into easy baskets for Manchester.
"We put a lot of defensive pressure on them," Manchester coach Corey Fether said. "We played a pretty consistent game."
Every Manchester player scored in the contest. Blades led the way with a game-high 19 points. He also grabbed four rebounds.
Brandon Casey and Brent Schriber each added four points and five rebounds, while Lukas Weber scored four points and grabbed seven rebounds. Brandon Sklenar had three points and Ryan Lenhart and D.J. Hone each scored two points. Jesse Forner had two points, five assists and five steals, while Matt Johnson and Dakota LaDouceur each finished with one point for the Dutchmen.
