With both teams struggling on offense early in the game, the one that could make the first run was going to be in good shape.

The Grass Lake Warriors shifted the tide in their favor in the second quarter and pulled away for a 43-27 victory over the Manchester junior varsity girls' basketball team in a Cascades Conference game Jan. 10.
The teams combined for 10 points in the first quarter, but Grass Lake took command with a 16-3 run in the second quarter. Manchester played even with the Warriors in the second half, but was unable to cut into the deficit.
"It was a very scrappy game," Manchester coach Katie Bennett said. "The girls played hard, but we didn't do the little things it takes to win a ball game."
Neither team broke through the other's defense in the first quarter, and Grass Lake held a slight 6-4 lead at the end of the frame.
The Warriors began to heat up in the second quarter, while the Dutch continued to be hurt by cold shooting and Grass Lake's strong defense. When their run was finished, the Warriors entered halftime with a 22-7 lead.
"The first half was very slow for us offensively, and they had a huge second quarter," Bennett said. "We never recovered from that."
The Dutch matched baskets with Grass Lake throughout the second half and received a spark from their bench. Manchester was unable to go on an extended run, however, and the Warriors coasted to the win.
Three players scored six points to lead the way for the Dutch. Stephanie Steele had six points, seven rebounds and three blocks, while Tabitha Withrow added six points and four rebounds. Macie Takessian scored six points and grabbed three rebounds. Logan Caszatt finished with a game-high 13 rebounds and a blocked shot to go with four points and Amanda Davis had three points. Amanda Barker scored two points and handed out two assists for Manchester.
"I had a couple players come off the bench and make big impacts in the game," Bennett said. "It was great to see new players step up."
The Dutch traveled to East Jackson after the newspaper's deadline Tuesday evening. Manchester returns to action Friday when it hosts the Michigan Center Cardinals for a Cascades Conference game. The junior varsity game tips off at 5:30 p.m. with the varsity girls' basketball game between the schools scheduled to begin approximately a half hour after the conclusion of the JV game.
