Manchester (2-8, 1-5 Cascades) were within striking distance throughout the game, but were plagued by fouls. For the game, the Dutch were called for 27 fouls to Grass Lake's 12. The Warriors took advantage, hitting 21-of-34 from the free-throw line, while Manchester finished the night 4-of-10 from the stripe.
"It was a good, hard-played game, but the difference was the fouls," Manchester coach Cori Kastel said. "Even cutting the fouls in half, it's still the game. It's no excuse, but the fouls decided the game. We have to be more disciplined."
Each team won a quarter in the first half. The Dutch carried the play for most of the first quarter and held a 10-7 lead. Grass Lake (6-6, 4-2 Cascades) fought back in the second quarter, outscoring the Dutch by five while the fouls began piling up for Manchester. The Warriors carried a 20-18 lead into halftime.
The teams played an even third quarter, but Grass Lake extended its lead to five points by the end of the frame. Manchester had three of its starters foul out in the fourth quarter, and the Warriors held off the Dutch to take the victory.
"We still played pretty good defense and trapped well, but with the fouls we had to play more of a prevent defense," Kastel said. "That's not our style and it was hard to adjust."
Also hurting the Dutch was lack of success from behind the arc. After carrying the team during the first month of the season, the three-ball disappeared for Manchester. For the game, the Dutch were 1-for-13 from the perimeter (7 percent).
Amanda Mutchler led the offense for the Dutch, scoring a team-high 12 points. She also grabbed five rebounds, forced three steals and handed out two assists. Laura Coltre had eight points, three rebounds, three steals and three assists, while Stephanie Preston added eight points. Stephanie Ball scored four points and recorded three steals and Tracy Schaible grabbed seven rebounds to go with three points for Manchester.
"It's frustrating because we've played well against the top teams in our league, but we're fighting to stay out of the basement," Kastel said. "We're a better team than our record shows, but we need some wins to keep our confidence."
Two players scored in double figures for Grass Lake. Danie Powaga had a game-high 19 points, while Jeni Lindamood added 15 points. Elicia Cannarile scored five points for the Warriors.
The Dutch traveled to East Jackson after the newspaper's deadline Tuesday. Manchester hosts Michigan Center for a Cascades Conference game Friday.
