Late rally can't help Manchester bounce back from flat quarter

In the majority of its losses this season, the Manchester junior varsity boys' basketball team has been plagued by one bad quarter.

It was the second quarter that spelled trouble for the Flying Dutchmen this time in a 43-38 loss to the Vandercook Lake Jayhawks in a Cascades Conference game Jan. 3.
Manchester (1-6, 0-3 Cascades) saw its losing streak get extended to five games. In many of those games, the Dutchmen played even with their opponents, but allowed a big run during one quarter to fall into a hole.
The same scenerio happened against Vandercook Lake. After a close first quarter, the Jayhawks used a 12-4 run in the second to gain a double-digit lead. The Dutchmen made a second-half comeback, led by Josh Blades, but were unable to overtake the Jayhawks.
"We played them even except for another poor second quarter," Manchester coach Corey Fether said.
Blades finished with 16 points to lead the Dutchmen. He also grabbed four rebounds. Rob Carver added six points and seven rebounds, while Ryan Lenhart scored five points. Brandon Casey, D.J. Hone and Lukas Weber each had two points and Jesse Forner and Brent Schriber both added a free throw for Manchester.
The Dutchmen traveled to Addison for a league game Tuesday after the newspaper's deadline. Manchester returns to action Friday when it travels to Hanover-Horton.
